The library will be closed on Saturday, January 14 through Monday, January 16th in observance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s birthday. Regular hours will resume on Tuesday, January 17th.

Google Graphing Calculator

Google does it again. I've always been a fan of their Advanced Search feature (did you know you can search just .gov or .org?), but now Google offers a built-in graphing calculator.

CNET writes about this new feature here. And this is a link to Google's blog post about the new feature.

While this may help you when you don't have your handy TI-83 calculator, you may still need to have the actual calculator during exams.

Did you know that the Parkland Library has TI-83 calculators to check out? Save some big $$ by checking one out for free!

World AIDS Day is held on 1 December each year and is an opportunity for people worldwide to unite in the fight against HIV, show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died. Yes, it's true. There are times when we have many more students wanting to use computers for class assignments than we have computers. Because this happens, we are starting "Academic Use Only" for all public computers Monday - Friday between 10:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.

We really want everyone who needs a computer for online library resources and to work on a class assignment to be able to use one. So only homework/academic-related sites will be accessible during these "Academic Use Only" times. Please help your fellow students out by respecting these limits.

Magazine Use Study

Magazine Use Study: please do not reshelve magazines in the Library this month!

The Library is doing a print periodicals (magazines & journals) use study this month, October 2011. The purpose of the study is to help library staff make decisions about print and online access to periodicals, and to ensure that we are providing the best materials in the most appropriate format for you.

Please continue to use any journals and magazines as you usually do, but please do not reshelve periodicals after use. Instead of reshelving, simply place materials on the carts located in the Current Periodicals area or leave near a photocopier if you are making copies. Library staff will record usage and then reshelve all periodicals.

Banned Books Week

According to the American Library Association:

"Banned Books Week (BBW) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting actual or attempted bannings of books across the United States.

Intellectual freedom—the freedom to access information and express ideas, even if the information and ideas might be considered unorthodox or unpopular—provides the foundation for Banned Books Week. BBW stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints for all who wish to read and access them.

The books featured during Banned Books Week have been targets of attempted bannings. Fortunately, while some books were banned or restricted, in a majority of cases the books were not banned, all thanks to the efforts of librarians, teachers, booksellers, and members of the community to retain the books in the library collections. Imagine how many more books might be challenged—and possibly banned or restricted—if librarians, teachers, and booksellers across the country did not use Banned Books Week each year to teach the importance of our First Amendment rights and the power of literature, and to draw attention to the danger that exists when restraints are imposed on the availability of information in a free society."

New Furniture in the Silent Zone

No more crawling on the floor looking for an available power outlet!

Have you updated to the newest version of Mozilla Firefox only to find that links won't open in the Ebsco databases? You're not alone. There is a compatibility issue. Ebsco is working on an update, but it won't be available until July.

In the meantime, use Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, or Safari. All of these internet browsers are working with the Ebsco databases.

National Library Week Recap

National Library Week was a great success at the Parkland College Library. Lots of events took place this week: the 2011-2012 Parkland Reads book was announced; we unveiled our newest READ poster; we had our 3rd Annual Cupcake-a-Book Contest; AND, newly added, we library people created our OWN books!

Our 3rd Annual Cupcake-a-Book Contest raised $112 for the Garden Hills Homework Club. The winner of the contest was Sarah Whittington, a Parkland Library employee. Her winning design was based on the book, Flowers for Algernon. Way to represent, Sarah!
Parkland Reads: One Book, One College chose their fifth book this year. The 2011-2012 selection is "Zeitoun." To read more about (and/or buy) the book, click here. Below is a picture of Sherry Cmiel, Parkland librarian and Parkland Reads coordinator, presenting the book.

AND, the newest READ poster was unveiled this week. This year's poster features Brian Nudelman, an Associate Professor in the Humanities Department. His featured book is "Slaughterhouse-Five" by Kurt Vonnegut. Come into the library to see the READ poster.

But wait, there's MORE! Several library employees participated in a new venture this year: If My Life Were a Book, the Title Would Be... Come into the library to see what we came up with. A favorite is Raeann Dossett's "And the Dog Just Stared." The cover shot is below.

Tell Your Parkland Story

Parkland Reads and WPCD invite you to TELL YOUR PARKLAND STORY on our next Day of Listening on Wednesday, April 13. This semester we are aiming to create a permanent record of interviews from our Parkland community on topics, issues and experiences that matter to us. Interviews can involve our history or they can focus on now or on (put on your space suit) the future.

How does it work? It involves two people – one to ask questions and the other to tell the story. If you want to interview someone you know who has a good story (or an experience or perspective on a particular issue that you want to record), ask that person and then reserve a time for the two of you to have a recorded conversation on April 13. If YOU’RE the one who has a story to tell, invite someone you know to ask you questions, and sign up to record your conversation on April 13.

Conversations should be 10 – 20 minutes long. After they are recorded, they will be posted here for everyone to listen to. You can listen to the stories that have already been recorded by clicking on the “Our Conversations” tab above.

Third Annual Cupcake-a-Book Contest : April 11th

National Library Week is April 10-16, which means the Library's third annual Cupcake-A-Book Contest is just around the corner! On April 11 from 10am-2pm, the book-themed cupcakes will be on display in the College Center. This year's theme is your favorite book, and after the fabulous creations from last year, we predict quite the competition.

Please fill out your entry form (click here for form) and send it to Sarah Whittington, Library, R-231, or drop it off at the Service Desk. Then check out some of the previous entries. Proceeds will go to the Homework Club at Garden Hills Elementary School, and the winner will become the reigning champion of cupcakes!

National Library Week is right around the corner! Parkland Library has activities planned to celebrate the week of April 11-15. This year's theme is: Create Your Own Story @ Your Library.

We invite you to join us in the following:

-- Our Third Annual Cupcake-A-Book contest taking place on Monday, April 11 from 10am-2pm in the College Center.

This year's theme is YOUR favorite book. Pick your favorite book and decorate a cupcake entry to fit with the story's theme, characters, plot, or title. Then come to the College Center and get people to vote with their cash for your entry. All money will go to the Garden Hills' Homework Club. The entry form must be submitted by April 8 @ 5:00pm.

Pi Day in the Library

For most of the Library Staff, π (pi = 3.14) is a nearly forgotten remembrance of long-ago high school math. But it came back to haunt us on "Pi Day" (March 14 = 3.14) in a refreshingly pleasant way . . . . apple, strawberry, sweet potato, key lime, lemon meringue, banana cream, chocolate chip cookie, and even lentil-spinach quiche and pizza pies were studied in a test of gastronomic delight. We are happy to report that unlike our math grades, Pi Day scored an A+ from all the staff.

The Bluford Series

The library now has the Bluford Series of books. This is a "collection of fifteen young adult novels that focus on the lives of a group of high school students and their families. The series draws its name from the school which many of the characters attend: Bluford High, named after Guion "Guy" Bluford, America's first black astronaut." A couple of categories used to describe the series: urban lit, hip hop lit, mystery, suspense, and romance.

Banned Books Week is September 25 - October 2, 2010

Celebrate your freedom to read by checking out a challenged or banned book during the 29th annual Banned Books week.

Come to the library and check out our display of books that have been challenged, restricted, removed, or banned from a school or library. While you’re here, pick up a list of ways you can stay informed and challenge censorship. These include participating in public hearings, writing letters to public officials, and just participating in Banned Books Week.

U.S. Supreme Court Justice William Brennan, in Texas v. Johnson, said, “If there is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment, it is that the Government may not prohibit the expression of an idea simply because society finds the idea itself offensive or disagreeable.”

Come in today to educate yourself on censorship issues while finding something enjoyable to read.

Last summer, we were looking over the list of databases to which the library subscribes. We realized we could be doing better for folks in the sciences.

That's why we've added two new databases to the lineup.

SciVerse ScienceDirect provides access to peer-reviewed journals covering physical, life and health sciences. The Lancet, Cell, and Materials Chemistry and Physics, are just a few of the more than 2500 journals you can search.

NetAnatomy is an image database featuring radiographic, cross-sectional, and gross anatomy.

This week, the library teamed up with Parkland's Adult Education Department to put together a display of library materials, booklets, statistics, and other information to highlight the Adult Education and literacy needs of our East Central Illinois community.

Why? We're in the middle of National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week, September 13-19. The needs are real. And since you can read this, you may be able to change other's lives by helping them find the basic education and training they need.

Do you think your ability to read this post means it doesn't matter to you? Consider the impact of these facts on the national economy, and our local community:

One in five adults in the United States has not completed high school (U.S. Census).
One in seven U.S. adults cannot complete a job application, read to their children, understand a prescription label, or complete an election ballot. Eleven million cannot communicate in English (National Assessment of Adult Literacy).
In Illinois, 13% of adults lack basic prose literacy skills. In Champaign County, home of Parkland College and the University of Illinois, it's 8%. (National Assessment of Adult Literacy).

If you or someone you know needs a hand developing basic skills for life and work, check out the Adult Education Department. They offer free GED and ESL classes, tutoring in reading and basic literacy, classes to help develop basic computer skills, and more.

I-Share Checkout Period Change

Checkout periods and renewals through the *I-Share catalog are changing. Beginning August 4th, the new policy gives the following rules:

Initial loan period: 28 days
Renewal loan period: 28 days
Number of times item may be renewed: 3

These new rules only apply to material requested through the I-Share catalog. Rules for items checked out from the Parkland Library remain the same.

*What is I-Share? It is the online catalog of 76 college/university libraries in Illinois. If an item is unavailable at Parkland, it may be requested through an I-Share library using the I-Share catalog. For more information, click here to read a full description of I-Share.

Credo has always been an easy source for credible information from online dictionaries, encyclopedias, etc. Now they have a "Topic Page" feature that pulls background, definition, references and news items together for many commonly researched topics. Try global warming or World War II to see examples.

Trashformation: An Exhibit of Recycled Materials

Come see trash transformed at " Trashformation: An Exhibit of Recycled Materials " inside Parkland's Library! The exhibition involves works produced in Chris Berti's three dimensional design class. The pieces in the exhibit are from the constructivist figure & interpretive chair projects. All pieces are made of recycled materials, from our very own Parkland students! The exhibit will remain up until Friday, April 30th, and is free and open to the public.

Graphic Novelists Speaking @ Parkland

Come hear J2D2 = John Jennings and Damian Duffy = creators, scholars, and curators of comics, hip hop, and new media art, and authors of the horror science fiction graphic novel, The Hole: Consumer Culture speak at Parkland College.

On Friday, April 23, the graphic novelists will be giving a talk/presentation from 11:00 - 11:50 in the Parkland College Library International Lounge. At noon, there will be a session in the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning on teaching strategies for using graphic novels in the classroom. National Library Week was a great success at the Parkland College Library. Lots of events took place this week: the 2010-2011 Parkland Reads book was announced. We unveiled our newest READ poster with not just one, but TWO Parkland employees. And, we had our 2nd Annual Cupcake-a-Book Contest.

Our 2nd Annual Cupcake-a-Book Contest was a success. We raised close to $150 for the Garden Hills Homework Club. The winner of the contest was Natalie Kenny Marquez, a Parkland employee. Her winning design was based on the children's book, Madeline. Congratulations, Natalie, a Garden Hills alum!

The Parkland Library Director, Anna Maria Watkin, presented a check to the Garden Hills Homework Club co-founder, Brian Nudelman. Nice check!

Parkland Reads: One Book, One College chose their fourth book this year. The 2010-2011 selection is "Listening is an Act of Love: A Celebration of American Life from the StoryCorps Project." AND, the newest READ poster was unveiled this week. This year's poster features two Parkland staff members, Larry and Anita Taylor! National Library Week is right around the corner! Parkland Library has activities planned to celebrate the week of April 11-17. This year's theme is "Communities Thrive @ Your Library", which is great for a library located right in a thriving community college!

We invite you to join us in the following:

-- Our Second Annual Cupcake-A-Book contest taking place on Tuesday, April 13 from 10am-2pm in the College Center.

This year's theme is children's books. Pick your favorite story and decorate a cupcake entry to fit with the story's theme, characters, plot, or title. Then come to the College Center and get people to vote with their cash for your entry. All money will go to the Garden Hills' Homework Club, and this year's goal is $300. With your help, we can do it! The entry form must be submitted by April 9.

The Library Gets a Makeover!

The Library is getting a face lift. The dark paneling is gone, and coming soon are new sconces, lighter woods, and a fresher look. As with all renovations expect some dust and noise. Please bear with us as these changes occur. We promise they will be worth it!

Think You've Got the Skills?

National Library Week is April 11-17, which means the Library's second annual Cupcake-A-Book Contest is just around the corner! On April 13 from 10am-2pm, the book-themed cupcakes will be on display in the College Center. This year's theme is children's books, and after the fabulous creations from last year, we predict quite the competition.

Please fill out your entry form (click here for form) and send it to Sarah Whittington, Library, R-231, or drop it off at the Service Desk. Then check out some of last year's entries and ask a librarian to help you find the children's books. Proceeds will go to the Homework Club at Garden Hills Elementary School, and the winner will become the reigning champion of cupcakes!

Greeting you as you enter the library is an entire display dedicated to providing you with resources for greening your life. There are books about environmentally responsible remodeling, eco-architecture, electric and hybrid cars, home energy saving how to, conscious lifestyle materials, and a free bookmark with 10 tips for going green here at Parkland! This display will be up for the month of April. Come check it out!
