Move Your Print Money!
As most of you know, the library has moved away from our old print card system to a new print system with accounts. At the end of this semester, the card readers in our change machines will be removed. So, if you still have money on either a PC Print card or your Student ID card, come by the library before the end of the semester to transfer that money to your account. Simply log into the Add Value Stations with your user name and password (same user name and password as your student email account), insert your card, and choose to transfer the money from your card to your account. If you have any problems, please ask a staff member for assistance.

Magazine Use Study - Vote With Your Reading!
Magazine Use Study: please do not reshelve magazines in the Library!
The Library is doing a print periodicals (magazines & journals) use study from October 15th until November 9th. The purpose of the study is to help library staff make decisions about print and online access to periodicals, and to ensure that we are providing the best materials in the most appropriate format for you.
Please continue to use any journals and magazines as you usually do, but please do not reshelve periodicals after use. Instead of reshelving, simply place materials on the carts located in the Current Periodicals area or leave near a photocopier if you are making copies. Library staff will record usage and then reshelve all periodicals.
Thanks in advance for helping to make the study a success!

Like Your Stuff? Don't Leave It Unattended.
As an important reminder...
Unattended laptops, cell phones, iPods, calculators, text books, and wallets (whether in or out of a bag/backpack) attract thieves. Please do not step away from your valuables, even for short trips to the copier, printer, or restroom. Instead, pack up and take your belongings with you or have a friend watch them while you're gone.
Note: Thanks to Lafayette College Library for this wording. Thievery is not limited to one college or one place. Be alert in public places.

Films on Demand offers ways to make films more accessible!
The Google Translate feature, at the bottom right of every page, makes Films On Demand accessible to users of all languages. From the drop-down menu, users can select from 53 translation languages, and the page's text will be translated into the selected language. This tool is perfect for users for whom English is not their first language, as well as for foreign language learners.
More than half of the videos on Films On Demand feature interactive transcripts and closed-captioning. If a title has a transcript available, a "Transcript" tab will display on the View Video page. With interactive transcripts, users can view the full text of the video and follow along as the video plays; print the transcript; click on any word in the transcript to jump to that exact point in the video and begin playing the selection; and search each transcript to locate every instance of a specific term in a video.
Find out more information about Films On Demand, including how to access the catalog of videos and films, by clicking here.

U.S. Constitution Week
With the Presidential election only 50 days away, and only 5 weeks until early voting starts in Illinois, now is a great time to take a look back at where it all began. Today kicks off U.S. Constitution Week and we have created a display on the main floor of the library. This display includes a number of books from our collection dealing with the drafting of the Constitution and also showcases this year's Constitution Week poster from the Daughters of the American Revolution. Stop by, have a look and read, and reflect on the beginnings of our nation as you prepare to cast your vote in the coming weeks. Also, if you still need to register to vote, you can do so up until October 9th in the College Center and still be eligible to vote in the election on November 6th.

Who moved my video?
The Library's Audiovisual Room has undergone a makeover this summer! Many
older, unused VHS tapes have been removed. Frequently used VHS have been ordered
in DVD format, shelving was removed. The result is a brighter, more spacious
room with materials that faculty use frequently. This also means things aren't
on the shelf "where they used to be." Use the Library catalog to locate call
numbers. And don't forget Films on Demand for educational streaming
video!

Where did all the tables go?
No, the library isn't clearing space so we can practice for So You Think You Can Dance auditions. We actually have new tables on order for you...tables with easy-to-access power outlets to match the ones upstairs. In order to make room for these new tables, we cleared out some of the old ones.
There is still plenty of space to spread out and study. The third floor silent zone is ready and waiting for you to bury your head in the books. We also have the group study room available if you and your friends need some extra room. Just talk to a Librarian; they will be happy to help you find the perfect location.

Library Purchase Award for Student Artwork
Come into the library to see the newest piece in the Parkland Art Collection: Student Artwork, Library Purchase Award.
Artist Statement:
Art has always been a part of my life. I came to Illinois to study Medical Illustration. As my family grew I continued to take classes this time at Parkland. That first class with Jack Extrom got me involved with pastels and I started doing portraits of children.
As my children and their friends aged so did my subject matter. In 1995 I again took a class with Jack this time in painting. My habit of choosing just the right color in pastel as opposed to mixing colors kept my paintings bright and vibrant. I love painting quirky subject matter of children and now young adults.
This painting is one of three that I have done from pictures taken underwater with a flash camera and I hope to do more.
Throughout my career I have won numerous national and international art competitions. I choose not to sell art in a gallery setting but do show my work and occasionally sell it at http://www.zhibit.org/liddiastevens or just type my name in and find the zhibit site and a few others.
I am honored to be a part of the Parkland Library Art Collection and am especially pleased with the selection of this painting for the library.

Next Parkland Reads Book!
The Parkland Reads' selection for 2012-13 is Into the Beautiful North, by Luis Alberto Urrea.
It’s a quirky book. It is a book about a road trip and U.S. pop culture. It is about poverty and immigration and stereotypes and the love of movies and bowling, and the drug trade and the border between Mexico and the United States.
Nineteen year old Nayeli works at a taco shop in her poor coastal Mexican village. She dreams about her father, who journeyed to the U.S. to find work, ending up in KANKAKEE, ILLINOIS. Recently it has dawned on her that he isn’t the only man to abandon the town. In fact, there are almost no men left in the village—they have all gone north.
After viewing the film, The Magnificent Seven, at the little local theatre, she comes up with a plan. Nayeli and three friends set out on a quest north to find seven Mexican men and smuggle them back into Mexico to protect the town from bandidos in the Mexican drug trade.
Their journey gives us an up close look at Mexican border towns as well as a look at the United States as a foreign country through the eyes of the travelers.
Luis Alberto Urrea is a member of the Latino Literature Hall of Fame. He was born in Tijuana, Mexico, to an American mother and a Mexican father. He has used his experiences from living in dual cultures to explore themes of living in two worlds. His nonfiction work, The Devil’s Highway, became a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He is also the author of another work of fiction, The Hummingbird’s Daughter. He teaches creative writing at the University of Illinois, Chicago.

Billie Mitchell honored on 2012 Parkland Library READ Poster
Parkland Library is proud to have Billie Mitchell, director of Parkland's Adult Re-entry Center, grace our 2012 READ poster. The poster is on display in the library--come check it out!
Billie was honored at a reception in the libary on April 12. She spoke movingly about the importance of reading in her life. Here's the text of her speech:
"I'd like to thank Anna Maria and the Library staff for selecting me for this wonderful honor, and Jennifer Davis and the Marketing staff for this beautiful poster. I'm thrilled that an activity I've loved my life long brought me to this honor. Everyone here knows what a wonderful resource the Parkland Library is to our students, faculty, staff, and our community. A community without a library is a poor community indeed. I also want to recognize those here who work in literacy, because there are still people who have literacy issues.
Those of us who love to read have cherished memories about the activity of reading, and I'd like to share a few of mine. First was that I started out as a slow reader. When I was in first grade, the teacher separated the class into different levels of readers--all named after some kind of bird. I was put in the slowest reading group (the name of which I can't remember), but I wanted so badly to be a 'Bluebird' because they were the highest group. A wonderful memory is sitting with my mother as we practiced my reading together so that I could advance. Then when I was a teen, and the house had to be dark and quiet at night so that parents could work the next day, I discovered that I could read by the street light that shone through my bedroom window. Finally, stored away in my keepsakes is the first book my nephew ever read to me. I can remember how wonderful it felt, sitting with him as he read this little book out loud to me.
I wanted to close with an author's quote, and I have selected one from Betty Smith who wrote "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn": "The world was hers for the reading." How wonderful to bring other worlds and cultures to us, and experience someone else's life and joy through reading."
THANKS BILLIE for sharing your love of reading with us all.

Librarian's Blend
Walking through Parkland's new food service vendor, Food for Thought, you'll notice they're selling Intelligentsia Coffee. It's exciting to see a localish (Chicago) coffee being served. One reason for the excitement? Librarian's Blend coffee. Wait, what? It's DECAF?!? Intelligentsia doesn't know the Parkland librarians very well. According to their website, this is how they describe the coffee:
The Librarian's Blend is named for that person who always told you to keep quiet when you were studying. This blend is representative of the soul of the librarian: steady, reassuring, and always there with that slight edge of eccentricity. It has a bold base with a bit of sparkle. Here's to good reading.
Okay, maybe they're partly right. What do you think?
Your fully caffeinated librarian,
Jane

New Faces at the Info Desk
Each semester the Parkland Library hosts several practicum students from the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Illinois. These students work on special library projects and staff some hours at the information desk. Practicum students use this experience to learn the ropes of reference here at Parkland, as well as earn some credit hours. Please welcome this semester's practicum students: Sarah and Karen.
Sarah Schmidt decided to pursue a career in library science after several years reporting for different newspapers across the country. Her focus in library science is on reference and instruction work, and her hope is to work at a two- or four-year college library, teaching information literacy classes. She has become more certain of this path, as she's enjoying working at the Parkland College Information Services Desk this semester.
Karen Klein is in her last semester at University of Illinois' GSLIS. She's interested in pursuing academic librarianship and open to other library experiences. Her goal as a librarian is to help patrons. Karen enjoys working on the reference desk as well as behind the scenes. When she's not studying she enjoys reading (of course!), writing, and spending time with friends.
Sarah and Karen are both eager to help you get all of the information you seek so if you've got a burning question (or several), ask away.
